What It Is
Building a solid foundation.
After a tooth is lost, the jawbone in that spot gradually shrinks. A bone graft places graft material where bone is missing; over the following months your body replaces it with its own bone.
The most common reasons are socket preservation (grafting right after an extraction so the bone holds its shape) and building up bone so a dental implant can be placed securely.
Blaskovich Family Dental does bone grafting in-house and plans it with 3D CBCT imaging, so the graft and a future implant can be planned together.
The Process
How bone grafting works.
- 01
3D CBCT evaluation
A CBCT scan shows how much bone is present and where more is needed.
- 02
Placing the graft
Under local anesthetic (with nitrous oxide or an oral sedative if you like), graft material is placed. This is often done at the same visit as an extraction.
- 03
Healing
The graft heals and is gradually replaced by your own bone. We check healing before moving to the next step.
- 04
Implant placement
Once there is enough healthy bone, the dental implant can be placed.

FAQ
Bone Grafting — questions answered.
-
Why would I need a bone graft?
Most often to preserve bone after an extraction or to add bone so a dental implant has enough support. Without enough bone, an implant may not be stable.
-
Do you do bone grafting in your office?
Yes. Blaskovich Family Dental does bone grafting in-house, planned with 3D CBCT imaging.
-
Does a bone graft hurt?
The area is numbed, so the procedure itself should not be painful. Mild soreness and swelling for a few days is common. Nitrous oxide or an oral sedative (Valium) is available if you'd like help relaxing.
-
How long before I can get an implant?
It depends on the size of the graft and how you heal. We check healing before placing the implant and give you a timeline for your case.
