What It Is
Sleep better without the mask.
Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep. An oral appliance is a custom mouthpiece that holds the lower jaw slightly forward to help keep the airway open.
For many people with mild to moderate sleep apnea — or who can't tolerate CPAP — an oral appliance is an effective option. Your physician decides whether it's right for you.
A diagnosis is required first. We make an appliance after your physician has diagnosed sleep apnea, typically with a sleep study.
The Process
How oral appliance therapy works.
- 01
Diagnosis from your physician
Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a physician, typically with a sleep study. Bring us your diagnosis and we'll take it from there.
- 02
Dental exam and records
We check your teeth, gums, and jaw to make sure an oral appliance is a good fit, and take the records needed to make it.
- 03
Custom appliance fitting
Your appliance is made for your mouth. We fit it, show you how to use and clean it, and make adjustments for comfort.
- 04
Follow-up
We check fit and comfort over time. Your physician may recommend a follow-up sleep study to confirm the appliance is working.

Sleep Apnea Oral Appliances — questions answered.
-
Do I need a sleep study before getting an oral appliance?
Yes. A diagnosis from your physician, typically with a sleep study, is required before we make a sleep apnea appliance.
-
Is an oral appliance an alternative to CPAP?
For many people with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, or who can't tolerate CPAP, yes. Your physician decides which treatment is right for you.
-
What's the difference between a snoring device and a sleep apnea appliance?
Snoring can happen with or without sleep apnea. A sleep apnea appliance treats a diagnosed medical condition, so it requires a physician's diagnosis. See snoring devices.
